We opened on July, 1963

The Grinder in El Cajon opened its doors on July 3, 1963. Pete DiGangi was the original owner. He grew up in Connecticut where the grinder style sandwich originated. In 1988 Pete was looking to retire. Bob Helt was the manager for The Grinder in El Cajon and he and his wife, Margaret, leased the business from 1988 until Pete’s passing in 1994. Bob and Margaret bought the business from Pete’s estate in 1994. Bob passed in 2014 and Margaret has been running it since that time.

The sandwiches today have the same flavor as when we opened our doors. Our menu has only changed by allowing more options for you to choose. We now offer a “Sandwich In a Bowl”  for those who want to enjoy a Grinder without the bread.  Any sandwich ingredients can be put on a bed of lettuce with your choice of oil and vinegar or Ranch dressing on the side.
